Assignment 2

“Black is Beautiful - Lighting & the Decisive Moment”

Below are 2 photos that show one subject matter shot under 2 different lighting positions:

This is a watch that I always wear to school. In the first photo, the light source was shone onto the watch from the bottom left and second photo from the top right (rembrant lighting). The reason why I chose these two angles is so that it creates a shadow at an oblique angle.

The above photo was taken using the following rules of photography:
* Filling the frame: there is no complicated background, just purely plain and this allows the viewer to focus only on the watch and not dsitracted by anything else.
* Negative Space: there is nothing at the background other than the watch. This allows the person who view this photo to focus on the watch - the shadow, the second, hour and minute hand as well as every single design and pattern of the 12 hour markings. This gives the photo a sense of simplicity and the simplicity is further enhanced by the simple design and pattern of the watch and with this photo that is taken in black and white, it gives a timeless look. It does not tell us the date and if the time shown on the watch is in the day or night.
* Rule of thirds: The watch was taken off-centre.
* Diagonal rule: The shadow was formed at an oblique angle.

The following are 4 photos of "The Decisive Moment" theme:

The above 2 photos was taken at Bukit Merah Central where these rides are for rent. The photo was taken using rule of third where the girl and the boy was taken off-centre and the floor tiles that look like stones formed a triangle to give the photo a feel of dynamic and movement.

This photo above was taken at the outside of a shop in habourfront centre. I used the technique - filling the frame to capture this snapshot. Every single person surrounding this machine was captured and taken in black and white, the actual colour of the place does not distract the viewer. Hence focus on the facial expression of the people who are observing at the girl playing with the machine. The photo was also taken at at angle to form diagonal lines to make the photo stronger and more dynamic. Rule of thirds was used as the group of people here were taken off centre.

This photo was taken at the sky park at Vivo city. This photo was taken at this angle that creates an illusion that the boy here was peeing. I tried to use the rule of thirds to take the boy off centre, but the background was too crowded with people so the was the maximum off-centre I could take. Horizontally, the rule of thirds was used. The floor, the low wall of the fountain and the background, each covers about a third of the picture. The diagonal lines of the water shooting out creates a sense of movement.

Assignment 1

“Extraordinary Out Of The Ordinary - Architecture & Me”

The following are my 2 exterior shot of exterior architectural scene in both
day and night:

The architecture in the above 2 photos is the Parliament House. I took the photo because this building holds a great role in our country and society of Singapore and I want to show the magnificent of the building. I made use of the technique frame within a frame and the rows of coconut trees that form linear lines to show the depth of the place. The building has vertical lines (from the trees, flagpoles, gates) that signifies strength and power. The building also has some horizontal lines which signifies stability and therefore reflect the stability, power and strength of our parliament.

Next, these 2 shots are the interior of SP in the day and night shot. It is the walkway I always take to my class venues:

The top picture is the day shot and the bottom picture is the night shot. The reason why I took this photo is because although many of us do walk through this walkway, but most of us do not stop and glance and look at how this walkway actually created an optical illusion. The day shot actually created a "more zoom out feeling" compared to the night shot which gives a "more zoom in feeling" due to the frame within a frame technique. The railings on the 2 sides creates linear lines which brings the viewer "in" and "out" of the walkway in the 2 interior shots. The day shot shows more light rays coming in and shone onto the floor which forms a boxing effect. It creates an optical illusion feeling.

“This Is Who I Am”

I want to portray myself as a deep thinker and I feel that the photographer who helped to take a photo of me did quite a great job. He took a photo of me at an angle and hence made a 'triangle' with the use of the railing. The sea and the Sentosa island forms a horizontal line which creates a tranquil and peaceful feeling and the calmness is further established with the curvy waves of the sea. At this angle, my expression could not be seen. This creates a sense of mystery what I am thinking in my head and what are my feelings.
